I have always been a big history buff, and World War II has always been one of my biggest interests. I remember watching videos on the history Channel of amphibious landing vehicles coming ashore at Normandy, and being quite impressed with the display. As a kid, I used to daydream about being part of the invasion. It seemed like such a cavalier, adventurous sort of thing to do. Nowadays, of course, I know that war is not all glory. The people getting out of those amphibious vehicles were risking their lives, and many of them lost them in very painful ways. Nonetheless, my fascination with war and war machinery has remained.
I think this interest is actually the origin of my amphibious vehicle obsession. Ever since I first rode an all terrain vehicle, I have wanted to have something I can take on land, in water, and over the toughest of obstacles. When I was a kid, amphibious vehicles seemed like the stuff of fantasy. I never really dreamed that they were something that I could own myself until one of my friends took me for a ride. His dad owned an amphibious all terrain vehicle, a rather battered old thing that they used to transport them on fishing, camping, and hunting trips. Hunting requires a lot of gear, so an off-road vehicle is a great asset – particularly one small enough to get in on some of the backwoods trails.
It was a kids dream come true. We bumped along to the noise of the engine rumbling over those hills. It stalled a couple times – it was a pretty old model – but we didn't mind. When we stopped and his dad had to tinker with the amphibious vehicle, it was a good time for my friend and I to enjoy the scenery around us.

I have been dirt bike riding, mountain biking, and hiking, and I have to say that this is the very best of the off road trail sports I have tried.
When I started looking into buying an all terrain vehicle, I was a little bit dismayed at first. I had not really put enough thought into how much my new hobby could cost! Nonetheless, I decided that it would be worth it. After all, for less than a thousand dollars I would have a great chance to do some serious outdoor rough riding whenever the mood struck me. All terrain vehicles work as well in the winter as they do in the summer, so I knew I would get a lot of band for my buck. To date, I have been pretty happy with the experience.
Men and women have different listening skills. It might be an old joke, but there is a lot of truth behind it. Men have horrible listening skills, but they aren’t horrible just because they don’t hear well, the just don’t hear certain things. I know that my husband can block out the tone of my voice rather easily, and he has had to pay for it. I don’t mean that I have done anything mean to him, but I have made great offers that he has blocked out. Once he blocks me out, the offers expire and I refuse to repeat them. Once he figured out what was going on, his listening skills greatly improved. I knew it wasn’t genetic.
Listening skills have nothing to do with hearing. Everyone hears just fine. The problem is understanding, processing, and responding to what has just been said. Men like to tune people out just because they aren’t interest in a conversation, or because they think the person is going to say something that they just don’t want to hear. I find it amazing that when my husband watches football his listening skills are second to none, yet when I am speaking I am often met with a blank stare and a well timed ‘uh huh’. After fourteen years of knowing my husband, I have learned what to do.
If you husband has poor listening skills, you have to catch him at the right time. It’s a bit of trickery, but it is something that women just have to do. I’m not saying that they want to ignore us all of the time, but I do think it is something they do because they don’t want to know that everything might not be up to the standards that they think they are setting. I have had to wait until I was sure my husbands listening skills were at their peak to tell him something important, even if I had to stop him in the middle of an intimate moment. I don’t care how wrong that sounds. It works and I stick with what works.
Since I started doing this, his listening skills at other times of the day have greatly improved. Perhaps he has gotten the message. If he doesn’t listen to me when I need him to hear me, I am going to speak up when I know he will, even if it’s just not the right moment and it means he has to wait for what he wants. Communication is the cornerstone of any good relationship, and if someone has poor listening skills, you have to find a way to work around it or things will never work out in the end.
